Han Shan, hired campaign organizer, is promoting a new video produced by Amazon Watch that smears Chevron with cancer claims that have been proven false long ago. The video titled, “Message from Ecuador to Chevron CEO John Watson” spins together bogus claims concocted by the Amazon Defense Coalition to increase pressure on Chevron to settle a trial lawyer funded lawsuit.
In typical fashion, Amazon Watch’s video neglects to mention that Ecuador’s government signed off on Texaco’s remediation, Petroecuador’s 1,400 oil spills since Chevron left Ecuador, the poor sanitation that is causing most of the illness in the indigenous population and the Ecuador government’s neglect in providing clean drinking water for its own people. Somehow, with one of the worst environmental records in history, government owned Petroecuador escapes any blame in the video, even as it still operates in the affected area today.
One fact tells the true story: to this day, the Amazon Defense Coalition has yet to provide any medical evidence to support its cancer claims. Chevron has thoroughly debunked these cancer claims using actual science.
