The Amazon Defense Coalition (ADC) was created primarily as a propaganda tool by Kohn, Swift & Graf, the Philadelphia law firm funding a bogus $27 billion lawsuit against Chevron in Ecuador. The ADC claims to be an Ecuadorian based nonprofit, however the organization’s official spokesperson is Karen Hinton, hired gun from a Washington, D.C. public relations firm. The ADC also employs the services of Democrat lobbyist, Ben Barnes to lobby the US Congress on environmental issues related to oil exploration in Ecuador. Finally, the ADC has partnered with Amazon Watch, a San Francisco nonprofit, to help coordinate its propaganda campaign in the United States.
So if all the action is taking place in Ecuador, why would the ADC need a Washington, D.C. public relations firm, a lobbyist to work Capitol Hill and a San Francisco based partner to coordinate its publicity campaign? Because at the end of the day, the ADC is conducting a smear campaign designed to force Chevron to settle the lawsuit.
